ABOUT ME

Hello! I'm Shivya Nath. In 2011, at age 23, I quit my corporate job with a dream of traveling the globe. 2 years later, I packed up my life into a backpack and decided to hit the road indefinitely. I travel slow, seek offbeat and local experiences, stay in a place for a few weeks or as long as it inspires me, and move on.

I've done a solo land journey from Thailand to India via Myanmar and travelled overland from the Persian Gulf via Iran to Armenia. I've lived with a Mayan community in Guatemala, volunteered at a coral reef restoration project in Cuba, lived in a nunnery in Ladakh (India), and shed my fears and clothes at onsens across Japan. I hope to inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and experience the world!

At the edge of the volcanic Lake Quilotoa in Ecuador, I gazed at the turquoise shades in the water. Changing with the drifting clouds. My thoughts drifted along too.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In my mind, I’ve always been a drifter. Over years on the road, I've come to believe that home is not a place but a feeling. A feeling that eludes me no matter how often I look for it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Perhaps it eludes me because deep within, I don’t really want to find it. With a home nowhere, I have everywhere to go.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So I put out my thumb, and rode countless times in the back of pick-up trucks and in vintage cars, the cold mountain air chilling my bones, but the rush of adventure and the warmth of the locals making up for it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Travelling across Ecuador, I had no fixed plans. I talked to locals, went on long walks, embraced unexpected adventures and found beautiful spots to read, write and just be.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Like getting on an unmanned cable car on a farmer’s assurance, to cross a deep gorge to the mountain on the other side!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Where are you going? I'm often asked. But my goal is not really to get anywhere. It is merely to be where I am with all my heart.⁣⁣
I feel like I’m here and now. I’m today. I’m this moment. I’m this thought. ⁣⁣

Will this lockdown change everything I associate with travel? Will I live more in the past than in the present? Will my idea of home evolve? ⁣⁣

Like thousands of kids in India, he was born in a slum. When the rest of us were toddlers in school, he worked long, hard hours in a tea shop.⁣
⁣
One day, a set of tea glasses slipped from his tiny hands and broke. Anticipating the thrashing that awaited him both at work and home, he decided to run away.⁣
⁣
Dadar Railway Station in Mumbai became his adopted home. He begged and polished shoes. Learnt to scavenge for food out of garbage cans. Slept on the platform or in the streets. Everything bad you can imagine on India’s streets, happened to him, even as he hardened up and learnt to fend for himself.⁣
⁣
A few years later, an orphanage called Snehasadan took him in. Gave him shelter and another chance at life. ⁣
⁣
When he grew up, he met a wealthy man and started doing odd chores around his house. He doubled as a chaffeur - his first glimpse of the glamorous life in Mumbai.⁣
⁣
Then came a turning point. He received perhaps the world’s most generous birthday gift from his employer – a trip to Barcelona!⁣
⁣
On his first ever international trip, he was amazed to notice that the boundaries of rich and poor don’t exist everywhere. He returned to Mumbai with newfound dreams and determination - to write his autobiography and use the funds it generated to start a cafe. A safe space for kids like him who grew up on the streets. ⁣
⁣
Sounds impossible, right?⁣
⁣
He is @aminbombay - the author of “Life is life, I am because of you” - a book that opened my eyes to another India and had me tearing up. ⁣

And his cafe @bombaytobarcelonalibrarycafe is one of the coolest cafe spaces in Mumbai right now 💚 ⁣

Sexual abuse: Abusive / violent sexual behaviour b

Sexual abuse: Abusive / violent sexual behaviour by one person over another, by force, without consent. The UN estimates that 35% women worldwide encounter marital rape, sexual harassment and other forms of abuse. It has happened for centuries.⁣
⁣
Slavery: The idea that one human being is owned by another. Deprived of the rights held by free people. Between the 15th and 19th century, nearly 13 million men and women were captured and sold as slaves. It happened for centuries.⁣
⁣
Caste discrimination: The idea that some people, by virtue of where they’re born, are less “pure” than others. Even though untouchability was constitutionally abolished in India in the 1950s, nearly a sixth of the country is still socially ostracised. Not allowed to visit common temples or even use the same well. It’s happened for centuries.⁣
⁣
Animal exploitation: Infliction of suffering or harm by a human on a non-human. 200 million land animals are killed EVERYDAY around the world for meat. Billions are enslaved, sexually violated and incidentally killed for milk, eggs, cosmetics, testing etc. Sentient beings who feel pain and love like you and me, deprived of the right to live freely, or live, period. It has happened for centuries.⁣
⁣
We often try to justify consuming another animal’s flesh or milk because that’s how humans have lived for centuries. But we’ve also lived with slavery, sexual violence, caste discrimination and other abusive ways through centuries. Does that justify them?⁣
