There’s Something About Taj.

My constant travels sometimes leave me craving to curl in and enjoy the finer luxuries of travelling. So when an opportunity arose, I decided to grab it and stay at the Club Room of the Taj Palace hotel, in Delhi itself. I first came across the concept of a “Staycation” – indulging in a luxury stay within your own city – while living in Singapore, and to be honest, cringed at the thought of wasting a weekend staying in when the world outside was waiting.

I’m glad I got a chance to dispel that notion, for last weekend was more rejuvenating that I could have imagined, even right in the middle of a city as chaotic as Delhi. In this post dedicated to my weekend at the Taj Palace, I’m going to try and tempt you to experiment with a staycation too, so brace yourself:

The Open-Concept Club Rooms

at the Taj Palace are chic and elegant. The decor is very modern, while the colors are earthy and tastefully chosen. My room overlooked the pool below, and the wilderness of Delhi beyond. An open, glass-walled bathroom meant I could soak in the bath tub while watching TV.

High Tea

When the clock strikes 3 pm, the whiff of freshly baked macarons and artisan sandwiches fills the Club Lounge. High tea comes complimentary with a stay at the Club room, which means you can easily skip lunch to indulge in the chef’s curations. I spent many an hour on the couches by the window of the Club Lounge, penning my thoughts and reading a book over a cup of hot mint tea and chocolate cookies.

Your Personal Movie Theatre

Not literally, but close enough. Taj club rooms offer a wide collection of Hollywood and Bollywood movies to choose from, with a flat screen TV and a DVD player in the room. When you request for a DVD, it comes with pepsi and fresh hot popcorn to complete the movie experience. Let’s face it, it’s the little touches that differentiate a good experience from an awesome one.

Cocktail Hours

In just a few hours, the Club Lounge transforms from a cosy cafe with the warm afternoon sun pouring in, to a lounge bar with dim lights. On the house for club room guests is everything from Single Malts to Chilean wines, snacks served hot from the grill, and cold nibblets to accompany every round of beer. The conversations are louder, the ambiance more friendly, and the experience more satisfying. Who doesn’t like a round of free alcohol, after all?

The Morning After

If your taste buds have indulged so far with the compliments of the club room alone (think movies, high tea, cocktails), the real treat awaits the morning after – an elaborate feast breakfast. There are live counters for eggs the way you like them, pancakes, and South Indian delicacies. An array of eclectic dairy creations line the tables, together with traditional North Indian fare and oriental delights. Almost anything that’s not on display but you would expect from a breakfast menu can be cooked to order. Your only task is indulgence.

The costs?

Add in early check-in and late check-out to the club room equation, and you’ve literally got an entire weekend – alcohol included – in your club room bill. I rest my case!

Have you ever stayed in, in your own city, to indulge in a weekend of luxury?

    1. That’s an excellent idea, Sonia! I’m sure they’ll love it. Let them know about the high tea et al, it’s not something that’s obviously advertised 🙂

    1. I understand, it never tempted me either. But having given it a try, it is a great way to rejuvenate after a stressful week without travelling too far. Let me know how it goes when you do try it out!

  4. Hey Shivya, super awesome pics. I agree it’s refreshing to laze around in such an amazing hotel. Booked and stayed at Trident/Oberoi in Gurgaon last year and though it was for work purpose, the business suite was so refreshing and a kinda extended work/vaction. It changes you and soothes the self.

    1. Hi Vishal,

Good to meet another staycation-ist 😉 I stayed at the Oberoi in Bombay once (while I still did the corporate drill), but I have to say my experience wasn’t half as good as Taj. Give Taj a try the next time, and tell me how you compare!

  5. Interesting :). Search for cheap accommodation on travel and stay at luxury in your home town. not a bad combination 🙂

Hey its a nice experiment ,I mean staying in a luxury hotel and enjoying every bit of it is an experience of life time. (y)

  7. So much about these gadgets revolves around style and being an early-adopter.
It is very compact to carry and easy to operate as well. When advertising in
an ezine, you place your advert in ezine that of the same
or similar niche with what you are offering in your
    site.
